Eve - You are so right. As a child in Berkeley in the 40s, I walked to school every day, crossing College Ave. with the help of 6th-grade crossing guards. Later, as a young teen in New Jersey, I took the bus to New York with my friends, and wandered all around by subway with my friends. Once we went skating at Rockefeller Center and tried on coats in the fur district.
Now, when my granddaughter wanted to bicycle to middle school in Alameda, she was unable to do so, not for fear of abductors, but of SUVs driven by parents dropping off their precious children and zooming out of the school driveway.
Her parents had to drop her off too (but she did walk home),
