Rui Luis, who ran Rooster Sails near Grand Marina, died Sunday, June 5, after falling into the water, the Alameda County coroner’s office said.
Luis, 48, was pronounced dead at Alameda Hospital at 11:51 a.m., said Deputy T. Engel, according to a report filed by the Bay Area News Group.
“Witnesses saw him trying to climb the ladder to his boat,” Engel said, “then the next thing he was in the water.”
The cause of death won’t be known until an autopsy is completed this week.
The local sailing publication, Latitude 38, says friends and family of Rui will gather to celebrate his life at 3 p.m., Friday, June 10, at the Rooster Sails loft, Grand Marina, 2021 Alaska Packer Place.
