If you’ve seen the signs and flyers for a Free Yano Barbecue and Benefit — which were all posted all over High Street this weekend — and are wondering who Yano is, here are a few details.

In early 2011, Yano Tesfay – 19 – was arrested and later sentenced to seven years in prison on an attempted murder charge after an altercation on Encinal Avenue. The articles that appeared about his contact with the Alameda Police and sentencing are not longer posted online.

His supporters are trying to raise money for books they wish to send to him in prison, and will be hosting a benefit for him from noon until dusk on Tuesday, June 19, at Upper Washington Park on Central Avenue near Crown Beach.

Yano’s incarceration have been the subject of some videos and blog postings by Bay Area residents, and supporters are vocal about their belief that the charges and sentencing were too harsh.
