Last Chance to Support School Kids in Need

Hundreds of Alameda’s low-income students need your support, according to the Alameda Education Foundation.

With your help, AEF’s program, “Equipped 4 Success,” will distribute 800 backpacks and supplies to these students before the start of the school year.

If you have not yet donated, go online to find several ways of supporting Alameda students in need.

1. Make a donation of $10, $20 or $30 and receive 25% – 50% off from some of Alameda’s favorite restaurants and wineries.

2. Make a tax-deductible donation here or mail a check to the Alameda Education Foundation, P.O. Box 1363, Alameda, CA 94501.

3. Make an in-kind donation of school supplies.

“Equipped 4 Success” is supported by the Alameda Education Foundation, the Alameda Unified School District, the Alameda Point Collaborative, the Alameda Boys & Girls Club, and the Alameda Collaborative for Children, Youth and Families.

The program’s goal is to fill 800 backpacks for low-income students served by Alameda Unified School District’s McKinney-Vento program for homeless families, the Alameda Point Collaborative, and the Alameda Boys and Girls Club.

Special Weekend Book Sale at Alameda Free Library

Friends of the Alameda Library is hosting a special Bonus Book Sale in the Stafford Meeting Room of the Main Library this weekend.

From 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 19, many books will be for sale, including:
– Bargain books
– 2nd chance books (Special higher priced books remaining from the May sale at greatly reduced prices)
– Collectibles from recent donations
– Signed First Editions
– Railroad Books
– American Indian Arts & History

August 19 is the final day of the weekend book sale, so there will be extra bargains — such as special prices on a bag of books.

Friends of the Alameda Free Library says that the recent large volume of book donations required this special sale to alleviate crowding in the group’s work space.

It will still hold a full, regular Book Sale at the O’ Club (at Alameda Point) from October 19-21.
