A kite surfer who had drifted off Crown Memorial Beach out toward Bay Farm Island was picked up by firefighters in a boat late Saturday, June 8.

Nearly 20 Alameda firefighters, as well as several police officers, gathered in the 1800 block of Shoreline Drive at 7:15 p.m. to launch a boat and rescue the man, who was described as middle aged.

No one was injured in the rescue.

Firefighters say the kite surfer had become tangled in his rig and was continuing to drift out into the Bay, prompting their concern and emergency efforts.
