Library supporters and music lovers enjoyed the last of three concerts in the 2013 Live@The Library series at the Main Library on Saturday, Nov. 16.
The guest performer, cabaret singer Paula West, was introduced by Oakland East Bay Symphony conductor Michael Morgan.
“When you listen to a good singer, at the end of a song, you can say you know how the song goes,” Morgan said. “At the end of a song performed by Paula West, you can say you know what the song means.”
Indeed. West’s interpretation of Bob Dylan’s “Rolling Stone” was impressive–full of respect for the original and yet fresh and contemporary. And she sang more traditional jazz tunes, like “Get Along Lil’ Doggie,” like the jazz great that she is.
(Earlier in the evening, the petite singer had introduced her two bull dogs to some members of the Alameda community.)
Alameda Free Library Foundation organizers were pleased with the show and the fact that the group’s fund-raising effort has hit $35,000 out of its $50,000 goal.
