It’s back. “High School Musical 2” has been the endless conversation topic in my household all week. The sequel to the popular musical airs on the Disney Channel at 8 p.m. tonight. (But have no fear — as the first one showed us — if you miss tonight’s premiere, it will air again. And again. And again.)
Ever since “High School Musical” skyrocketed to shocking success, pop culture aficionados have compared it to the musical of my generation, “Grease.” As luck would have it, my stepdaughter, Dana, stumbled across the classic on a cable station this past weekend. “Is this any good?” she asked. Bless you, I thought. This was my chance to expose her to a real musical revolution.
I dusted off my VCR copy, so she could watch it from the beginning. I still remembered the words to most songs, but, fearing she’d run screaming from the room, simply hummed to them softly. I cheered (again quietly) when Danny beat Kenickie at Thunder Road. I got a kick out of seeing Frankie Avalon. I forgave the director for what I now recognize as a cheesy, fly-into-the-sunset ending.
When it was all done, I turned to Dana with great anticipation. “Wasn’t that great?” I asked. “Sure,” she said with nonchalance. “But the actors are pretty old.” Humph! Talk about feeling one’s age. All I can say is that I can’t wait until her children are old enough to say the same after watching the “High School Musical” franchise.
