So many lives disrupted, so many homes burned. Thank God no one died in that particular fire – that would be a heavy burden for a youngster to bear. This one’s heavy enough.

The grass nearby was dead — dry kindling waiting to ignite. My husband saw the flicker of the flame and hopped up on the fence to give him an earful. The boy seemed startled. Now, I wonder if it was enough. Perhaps we should have told his mom. The L.A. fires are proof that even a harmless incident could have been serious.
