Toy beads linked to date rape drug

aquadotsYes, you read that right. Yesterday’s toy recalls included the usual lead-painted toys , plus 4.2 million Aqua Dots craft sets, whose chemical make-up mimics the “date rape” drug gamma hydroxybutyrate or GHB when ingested. Bizarre? Well, the beads are fusible – when sprayed with water, their chemical coating fuses the bead design into a finished craft project. And that chemical coating does not belong inside humans. Two children who swallowed the beads went into comas, three more had to be hospitalized. All have recovered. But you need to go up-end that toy chest again if this immensely popular toy sounds even vaguely familiar. Chances are, it will: Wal-Mart listed Aqua Dots on its top 12 list last year. For information on how to return the toys, call (800) 622-8339 or visit the AquaDots recall web site, although when we checked it this morning, it was so swamped the server had crashed.
