AMERICAN GIRL & Other Books

We had big fun last week contemplating kiddie tunes that get stuck in our heads -and giving away a copy of the Sippy Cups’ new DVD (congrats, Rachelle and your Smurf Toothbrush song!). Now we’ve got some hot-off-the-press tween books to give away, including the unauthorized “Fan’s Guide to the Spiderwick Chronicles” and the newest American Girl tome, “Mia,” by the Bay Area’s own Laurence Yep, about a young ice skater torn between playing ice hockey with her brothers and figure skating for herself. So this week, we’re looking for great book recommendations for tots, tweens, teens, you name it. Want to win those books? Click “comments” – we’ll draw a winner’s name Friday night – and tell us, what’s your favorite kid lit in the post-Potter age?

Our favorite books to read to my son (who is almost 3) are Dr. Seuss books, whether it is “One Fish, Two Fish…” or “The Cat in the Hat”…he loves the rhythm of the rhyme.
We also enjoy cultural books from the NW Coast Indians, such as “Frog Girl” and “Storm Boy” by Paul Owen. They have amazing artwork, and have very unique/cultural stories.

Much to my chagrin, my boys (ages 9 and 6) are into Captain Underpants. I love the classics like Ginger Pye, Charlotte’s Web and Sarah, Plain and Tall.

My daughter is reading all the American Girl historical books and their mysteries. She picks up Shel Silverstein books at the library all the time too (Runny Babbitt, Where the Sidewalk Ends). She just finished reading Mary Poppins Comes Back.
Favorite book post Harry Potter would probably be books by Andrew Clements. I loved Frindle.
