Pill bottle, MCT Direct Are we overmedicating our kids? That’s the question of the hour. More specifically, it’s the question of the 9 o’clock hour this Sunday when Rona Renner’s “Childhood Matters” show looks at childhood psychiatric drug use. Interesting topic, no? Rona’s panel includes Dr. Glen Elliott, chief psychiatrist at the Children’s Health Council and author of “Medicating Young Minds,” and Walnut Creek’s own Dr. Lawrence Diller, behavioral pediatrician and author of  “Running on Ritalin” and “The Last Normal Child.” Tune in on 98.1 KISS-FM or 105.1 KOCN-FM. 1. Deborah Witherell Says:

Thanks, Rona, for your comment on the school doing its part to determine whether learning disabilities are contributing to a child’s behavioral and attention problems.I have found, in my practice as a learning specialist, many children with behavior and learning problems, who did have learning disabilities that were not identified in testing done at school. If parents suspect a learning problem, or have questions that are not answered by the school’s testing, they can get help through private or non-profit advocacy organizations. An appropriate school setting, with appropriate expectations and accommodations, is a very big piece of the treatment for children having attention and hyperactivity problems, whether or not they are receiving medication.
