Too adorable to resist, that’s all we can say about this new picture book, “A Home for Dixie,” written by a New Jersey high schooler. And for this week’s book giveaway, we’re pairing it with an equally heartwarming DVD, “Mist, The Tale of a Sheepdog Puppy.” All puppies, all the time. And all you have to do to win the pair is share a tail, er, tale, about your favorite childhood pet, or at least share fuzzy wuzzy’s name. (Or fishy wishy. We’re not dog-centric here.)
So here’s how to play (although we know Emily N, whose saga of a torturous flight with the kids won last week’s giveaway, already knows this!). Click “comments” and tell us about your favorite pet, and we’ll draw a winner this weekend.

My childhood cat, Peringa. She followed me everywhere. I would sit out on the grass and she’d follow and roll around. She looked so happy. I miss her.

When I was a kid, I had a dachshund. I named her “Chugga Chugga” after the dog in the McGilla Gorilla cartoon!

My all time favorite pet was Puppy Chow (yes that was his name, my parents were not creative and named him after his dog food). He was 5 months older than me (it would have been 6 months but he jumped on my mom and she went into labor a month early!) He more than made up for it when I was a couple of months old. A man ran into our house (my dad was in the garage,my mom in the back room doing laundry and I was in the playpen in the front room.) The dog jumped into the playpen, sat on me, growled at the man and bit him a few times as he reached into my playpen. My parents heard the dog and came running. The man ran off but was never caught. I really don’t know what the man was up to but I know that Puppy Chow was protecting me.

My favorite pet of all time has to be “Purry-Fur”. The torturously named cat first belonged to my grandmother who got the cat as a kitten. As a Kitten, Purry-Fur was well….furry….and purred a lot.
My grandmother loved her cat, and when she was in the hospital, she insisted that my mother NOT take the cat into her home, but that she put the cat into boarding (because my mother’s house is notorious for having cats be run over in the street).
My mother took in the cat anyway, and when my grandmother died she became the proud owner of a gigantic bodied and small headed cat with the unfortunate name of “Purry-Fur”. Never mind that the cute kitten who was once a big puff ball had become somewhat an attack cat over the years, paranoid of anything that moved for pretty much no reason at all.
When I moved out and got my own home, I took Purry Fur with me. Big Huge body…little teeny head, he was a great companion for a girl who was on her own for the first time. My friends would make fun of the “psycho cat” who was afraid of flies, paper moving, shoes, etc, and also teased about the name “Purry Fur”….calling him Fury of the Pur, etc. (Fury…anger…get it?)
Anyway, When I left for graduate school, I could not bring the cat with me, so it returned to my mother’s home. By this time the cat was over 20 years old, was still huge with a teeny tiny head, and had calmed down a bit. I loved to visit my cat at my mother’s home (in Oregon) and even introduced my husband to “my first love”, Purry Fur. It was only a year after I met my husband that I got the news that he passed away, quietly, in the downstairs closet, curled up on my “galoshes” that I left in Oregon.
He was insane, he had a very unfortunate name, and was absolutely funny looking, but he was a loving cat who I spent over half of my life loving.

Well, I grew in a family of animal lovers deluxe! As a child, I would find stray puppies and bring them own. I was lucky because we always kept what I found! My brother was a veterinarian, so we have had some very unusual pets. I suppose my favorite was my pet red squirrel that I named “Squeaky!” A hunter had shot the mother and when it feel out of the tree, tiny newborn Squeaky was in her mouth. How sad! He brought the baby squirrel to our house
/ brother’s office and we kept it. My mom bottle fed it for almost 3 months before her eyes opened. We made her a huge cage in out house and a little house inside of the cage. We also put a huge limb and light for her. She lived for 8 years and then died in my hands from a heart attack. She was a lot of fun. Thanks,Cindi

My family adopted a stray cat when I was 11 years old. We soon found out she was carrying kittens, so her name became “Mom-Cat.” The name stuck, even after the kittens moved on to new homes.

When we were dating my hubby found a stray dog tied up at an abandon house. The poor pup was less than 8 weeks old with no food or water. So my hubby adopted the dog and named it Jackson. About a week later he took Jackson to the vet and found out he was a she and now Jackie is our favorite furry little girl.

There are always fur kids in our house. Right now we have two, Milele and Kouga. I got Milele from a friend and Kouga is a rescue. He has really become a loving, confident dog after a rough start in life. He just seems to appreciate everything so much.
