Save the Bay canoe trek
1. Pack a picnic, don some grubbies and head out for a family canoe trek at Oakland’s Arrowhead Marsh this Saturday. It’s $20 for kids 10-18 and $45 for grown-ups, but the cost covers canoes, paddles, life jackets and guides — and it all goes to Save the Bay. (Are you a South Bay family? They’re doing it again in Palo Alto on Aug. 9!)

2. Fly a kite or just enjoy the spectacle of colorful, gigantic airborne things at this weekend’s Berkeley Kite Festival at Cesar Chavez Park at the Marina, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Free.

3. The Chevron Family Theatre Festival returns to Walnut Creek’s Lesher Center for the Arts this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., complete with Sippy Cups ($5), Sesame Street puppeteers ($5), Taiko drummers, cowboy roping lessons and loads of free activities too.

4. Speaking of free, the Pleasanton Library’s free Summer Jazz series features the Berkeley Jazz School’s Isaac Schwartz Trio this Saturday at 7 p.m. Young musicians, free music, big fun.

5. Or zip over to Sausalito for some Cajun, Creole and Zydeco music at the Bay Area Discovery Museum when Johnette Downing performs Saturday at 11 a.m. ($8 for the show, $8-$10 for museum admission.)
