Thinking about making the trek to Mt. Rushmore? There’s more to South Dakota than a bunch of rocky presidents. Just ask Joyce Zee and Brandon Wong, the first finalists in the the Times’ “One Perfect (Vacation) Day” family travel contest. And this, they say, is how to do Mt. Rushmore with flair – and luge rides:

THE TREK: “We spent Memorial Day weekend at the Black Hills in South Dakota with the main purpose of visiting Mount Rushmore. Who knew we could have so much fun in South Dakota?”

THE TRAVELERS: Joyce Zee, owner of All About Honeymoons, and her tech support husband, Brandon Wong, San Leandro

BEST BEDS: The Radisson in Rapid City. Great location.

BEST EATS: The Corn Exchange in Downtown Rapid City practices farm-to-table principles with amazing flavors – savory white corn and scallion pancake topped with lox and creme fraiche!

The Alpine SlideOUT & ABOUT: Besides visiting the incredible Mount Rushmore, the Zee-Wongs enjoyed the President’s Alpine Slide Rushmore Tramway — take a scenic chairlift ($7 adults, $2 kids) up the summit, enjoy a buffalo burger on top and then come down on the Alpine Slide ($9 adults, $2 kids) — and Bear Country USA, a drive-through wildlife park ($15 adults, $8 kids) where the bears come right up to your car.
Carhenge
P.S. If you’re driving to South Dakota, take a detour to Alliance, Neb., and check out Carhenge, a replica of Stonehenge made from cars.
