The Davis Family in Italy
Remember way back when teens backpacked across Europe? They still do – and this family did it as an all-guys trip. Foothill Middle School teacher Ron Davis took his four boys on a month-long jaunt from England to Italy, with stops in Germany, Holland, Austria and France.
The Travelers: Ron Davis Sr. and his teenage sons Ron Jr. and Cody, both at Northgate High, middle schooler Kris, and little brother Clayton, Walnut Creek.

The Trek: A month-long backpacking and camping adventure through Europe, with stops in Venice, Rome, Pompeii, Florence and Pisa.

Best Beds: Camping in Pompeii next to the ruins at the Villaggio Spartacus – camping sites, cabins and trailers available.

The Davis Family in Italy Best Eats: “At the Villaggio Spartacus there is a restaurant that all the locals come to in the evening,” says Ron. “They have all the finest Italian foods and the pizza is the best in the world. The woodstove is set in the middle of the restaurant so you can watch the owner of the restaurant work. There are pictures on the wall of him making pizzas during WWII and he is still going strong. The pizza takes 2.5 min to cook in his oven – by far the best food we had in Italy.”

Cool sights: The Davis family camped with American students who had volunteered for the summer doing archeology digs and saw them working at the ruins of Pompeii. Other trip highlights? Riding in Venetian gondolas and peddling a cart around Lido Island in Venice (check out the photo above, which won “Reader Favorite” in the Times’ “One Perfect Day” travel photo contest). Salt mine tours in Salzburg, Austria, where you slide down wooden bannisters to reach the bottom of the mines. And Eurail-passing it around Europe with tickets that ended up saving the family thousands in transportation costs.

sounds like fun! if your blog will inspire others to travel to Rome I suggest to start planning your trip on vacation rentals in rome where you will find rooms and apartments all over town and with free wi-fi…ciao!

My Dad visited Pompeii in WWII, and got these old postcards and photos. He was in the US Navy at the time.
