"Caveman's Guide to Baby's First Year"New moms have those cool “girlfriend” guides to pregnancy and babies. Now new dads have their own irreverent guide. Enter the Caveman, aka as David Port, John Ralston and Brian Ralston, MD. We loved their survival guide for expectant fathers and now, we’re loving their latest, “The Caveman’s Guide to Baby’s First Year.” It includes pediatric advice and developmental stages, as well as tips on “Couple and Caveman Maintenance.” We’re giving away a copy this week and all you have to do is click “comment” and tell us, what advice would you give a new dad? Offer up a tip. We’ll draw a winner next weekend! (And congrats, by the way, to Noreen who won last week’s political picture books!)

My advice to a new dad?
Take time off to spend with the kid / family. (Even better; do it when the kid is a little older, like between 2-4 years old.)

You will NEVER regret the time spent with your kid. You’ll be even more amazed at how great he/she is. You’ll gain a greater appreciation of at-home parents… blah, blah, etc.

    OR

Take the infant out of the house for a few hours by yourself on a regular basis (every Saturday morning for example) and give the spouse a chance to shower, nap and have a quiet lunch alone. You’ll be a hero, I promise.

  2. Teri Stoddard Says:

Take mom out on a date at least once a month, without the baby.

  3. Marci Says:

Take the time to get to know your child(ren). Learn to change diapers, hold your baby, talk to your baby. Children grow up very fast and you don’t want to miss out on all the wonderful joys that they can provide.

And please don’t forget about Mom. Mom is tired and needs lots of extra help and attention.
