LeBlanc Family on KauaiHawaii-bound? Susan LeBlanc and her daughter spent six days on the Garden Island of Kauai this summer, and while Susan’s daughter Nicole is now all grown-up, many of their discoveries would do splendidly for any family headed for Hawaii. So here’s the scoop – the Lappert’s coconut-macadamia ice cream scoop.
THE TRAVELERS: Paralegal Susan LeBlanc and her daughter, sales rep Nicole Roulette, Oakland.

THE TREK: Six days of wonderful mother-daughter time in a tropical paradise.

BEST BEDS: The Sheraton Kauai Resort at Poipu Beach. The island is so small, says Suan, that any destination is only a few hours away. From our balcony we could even see humpback whales breaching and spouting in the distance.

MEMORABLE MEALS: We loved the Savage Shrimp Truck — a truck parked at the intersection of Hoonani and Lawai roads, not far from the hotel.
The owner cooks up delicious garlic shrimp scampi and Bahia shrimp scampi — Brazilian style with coconut milk — in the back of the truck. You get a huge plate of shrimp, white or brown rice, and cole slaw for around $10. And you can wash it down with a can of Pass-O-Guava soda. There are a few tables and chairs next to the truck where you can sit and eat.

And Puka Dog in the Poipu Shopping Village. Anthony Bourdain featured it on the Travel Channel. You load up your Polish or veggie dog with your choice of secret, locally made tropical sauces and relishes, including mango, papaya, banana, pineapple, coconut and star fruit. (The first two minutes of this Bourdain video is all about Puka Dog)

But for dessert, the best place on the islands is any Lappert’s ice cream shop. We had to stop every time we saw one. They have fantastic homemade ice cream and sorbets with flavors like Coconut Pineapple, Caramel Coconut Macadamia Nut and Kona Coffee.

OUT & ABOUT: The most spectacular trip we took on the island was through the magnificent Waimea Canyon — nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” The best advice we can give to anyone going to Kauai is to take your time and enjoy all the local sights and flavor of this unspoiled island. Everywhere you look there is absolutely gorgeous scenery.
