Fans of Jeanne DuPrau‘s “City of Ember” series are counting down the days till Oct. 8, when the movie opens. It’s the first installment in a series about a glittering city buried deep beneath the Earth more than 200 years ago to save the human race. But now, the lights are flickering, the vast storerooms are emptying and no one remembers or even wonders how they got here. No one, that is, except 12-year-old Doon Harrow and Lina Mayfleet who run across a mysterious document labeled “Instructions for Egress.”
Read on to find out more about the movie, see the movie trailer, and find out how to meet Jeanne DuPrau this Friday in Menlo Park.
The spellbinding tale of Ember continues in “The People of Sparks” and concludes in “The Diamond of Darkhold,” which came out just a few weeks ago. Now, Kepler’s Books is bringing DuPrau to the Menlo Park Library this Friday at 7 p.m. to talk about her books and the new movie.
Now, about that movie… The cast includes Tim Robbins as Doon’s father, an eccentric inventor (is there any other kind?) who has been gathering the city’s secrets, and Bill Murray as the visionary, selfish mayor, and Martin Landau as Doon’s narcoleptic boss in the pipeworks of Ember. Lina is played by Saoirse Ronan, the 14-year-old actress who won an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe for her role in “Atonement.” (Ronan, by the way, will be in fourth grade fave “True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle” next year.)
