"Queen of Halloween" by Mary EngelbreitThere’s a nip in the air, leaves are turning color (well, not in California, but elsewhere!) and mini-Snickers bars fill the aisles … Stores have been celebrating the start of Halloween shopping season for months, of course, but now even we are getting in the mood. So this week we’re giving away a pair of adorable picture books, including Mary Engelbreit’s “Queen of Halloween” and Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul’s tale of “Winnie’s Midnight Dragon.” And all you have to do to win these is click “comments” and tell us, what was your favorite childhood Halloween costume? We’ll draw a winner’s name next weekend. (This contest is now closed. To see the current contest, just click here..)

My favorite halloween costume was when I was 12, I was a gypsy.

  2. Naomi Says:

When my parents got divorced, my mom was working more so one Halloween I decided to make my own costume and painted my face with her eyeshadow so I could be a kitty cat… she thought it was adorable, but I cringe whenever I see the pictures!

  3. Michele Says:

I grew up in Australia where there was no Halloween, so no costume for me!

  4. Rachelle Goldenberg Says:

My very favorite halloween costume growing up was the year my mother built me a black cat costume. She always took the time to build me costumes, and build them for herself as well from patterns (Simplicity). Everyone always thought I had great costumes…they were great because my mom made them for me…with her own two hands. ;) (I wish I was that talented)

Halloween was always my favorite time of year, and still is!

Hello, Both of the books are fantastic! They would make great gifts. In the third grade, I was a “Rosebud” in a play we presented. Someone had made me a lovely rosebud costume our of red and green crepe paper type material.
There was even a hat I wore like a stem! This was my favorite Halloween costume. Good thing it didn’t rain that night, though!!!!! The fall with Halloween, Thanksgiving, colorful leaves, hayrides, etc. is so wonderful. Please enter me in your delightful giveaway drawing. Many thanks, Cindi

  7. Kristin Says:

I rocked as Strawberry Shortcake one year. The homemade hat made the costume. All I was missing was some air freshener to spray around so that everyone could smell the strawberry scent.

  8. Megret Says:

I dressed up as Strawberry Shortcake 3 years in a row. :) I guess you can say that was my fav!

My mom was AWESOME at Halloween makeup (seriously she should have been a movie makeup artist) I was a vampire for multiple years and my friends never recognized me! My mom sewed my entire outfit and I scared children without trying to! It was awesome.

My mom made me a bat costume. I was all in black and the wings were two 2X4s with black plastic sheeting stapled to it. I won first place that year!!

  19. Joan Says:

My aunt was a true hippie, so, there was never a shortage of flowing skirts, bracelets, and bandanas. I was a gypsy more times that I care to remember. For a refreshing break, one year I was a baby blue angel with feather wings and a golden halo. I was so happy to be doing something different. That costume will always be my favorite.

My Mom made me a black widow costume. It was great, she stuffed black tights for the extra legs and used red tape to make a hourglass on my stomach, I loved wearing in my school parade!!

  23. Renee Turner Says:

When I was in High School, I dressed as Olive Oyl. That was really fun.

  24. Michele P.m Says:

I was a hobo lady… patched up clothes, mismatched shoes, dirty looking face and unkempt hair. It was not the normal getup for a young girl, but I was also collecting coins and change with my candy to help the homeless pets at the animal shelter, so I wanted my outfit to remind people that not everyone has a home…even if it walks on four legs. While I couldn’t share my treats with them, I used the money collected to buy lots of treats for the pets and drop them off to surprised shelter officials.

  25. Barbara Says:

I loved dressing up as Barbie since that was my nickname. I even got my brother to dress up as Ken one year

I had to be unwrap and then rewrap, my helpers (mom and Dad) were not too happy!

  28. Janelle Says:

My favorite costume was orphan Annie. My mom made my brother dress as the dog, Sandy. Poor little guy!

  29. Jess Says:
