CREEK Kids Care Craft Boutique

Volunteers (Gary Meader Illustration)Now this is a sweet event! If you’re starting to think about holiday shopping, check out this Sunday’s crafts boutique held by Creek Kids Care, a group of Walnut Creek tweens and teens from Walnut Creek Intermediate and Las Lomas High schools. All the craft items – handmade stationery, framed artwork and touchstone magnets – were made by concerned, hopeful Walnut Creek children and teens “who believe their time, creativity and effort can make a difference in the world.” The proceeds are being used to help the local homeless community and fully fund a preschool in Zimbabwe that serves kids orphaned by HIV/AIDS. This Sunday’s event runs from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

The American Association of Orthodontists just asked celebrity chef Michael Chiarello for a slew of colorfully creepy, braces-friendly Halloween recipes and the results are so appealing… well, you have to check them out. Here are Chiarello’s frozen Black & Orange Bon Bons. (But we’re also smitten by Chiarello’s Green Goo Slimedoo, a green-tinged chocolate fondue with apples, strawberries, bananas and pretzels for dipping. Mmmm…)

TOTS Rock the Vote

Baby Vote (Chris Ware illustration)Everyone’s waiting for election day with bated breath, but November 4 is “Let’s Go Vote Day!” at Berkeley’s Habitot too. Preschool aged tots are invited to cast a ballot in the children’s museum’s mini-voting booths, make Lincoln hats and stars-and-stripes necklaces, and settle in for some patriotic storytelling too. Big fun. And it’s all free, thanks to Wells Fargo Bank, which is sponsoring the festivities from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

FAB FIVE for the Weekend

Trick or Treat (David M. Barreda/Mercury News)
Halloween is obviously the big draw this weekend, but here’s a quintet of other fun ways to pass the days.

1. The Exploratorium is hosting a Phantasmagorium Halloween Night at the Palace of Frights tomorrow, Oct. 31 from 6 to 9 p.m. It’s Halloween with a spooky scientific slant and plenty of treats. (Free with admission.)

2. One of the best things about Halloween: the adorable photos you snag of your little ladybug or pint-sized Darth Vader. John Muir Women’s Health Center is holding its 9th annual Halloween Photo Shoot in downtown Walnut Creek tomorrow, Oct. 30, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Call 925-941-7900 or visit their web site for portrait reservations. $15)

THREE Days Till Halloween…

Ghoulash (Mark DuFrene, Contra Costa Times)
It’s hard to get little trick-or-treaters to down something nutritious on Halloween night. They’re much too eager to go scavenging for candy to wait for you to, like, cook something. But if you whip up this “ghoulash” the night before, you can just nuke it and scoop it on Halloween night. This recipe’s both delicious and easy, and it’s from our new favorite book, “A Ghostly Good Time: The Family Halloween Handbook.” You’ll find even more recipe ideas – including the cheesy spider perched on the bowl above – in this morning’s Times and Tribune food section spread on Halloween parties. Here’s how to make the Ghoulash…

JONAS BROS & Walter the Flatulent Dog?

Jonas Brothers (Dick Clark Productions/Landov/MCT)Walter the Farting Dog Talk about strange combinations. Variety Magazine is reporting that the Jonas Brothers, the tousle-haired, insanely popular Disney Channel boy band, just signed on to 20th Century Fox’ latest, a cinematic version of … “Walter the Farting Dog.” Yep, William Kotzwinkle and Glenn Murray’s bestselling Walter series – about a dog with flatulence so extreme, he’s been banned from the beach, a cruise ship and other public venues – is making the jump to the big screen. And the directors are likely to be the Farrelly Brothers of “There’s Something About Mary” and “Dumb and Dumber” fame. We were going to say something snarky, but really, there’s nothing to say. Jonas Brothers, a large gassy dog whose odor fells jewel thieves, Farrelly brothers … nope, that’s it. No, wait. Variety says, “The studio sees a potential franchise.”

So… you gonna go see it?

EX-KNICKS PRESIDENT blames overdose on daughter

STFHow does Isiah Thomas atone for what’s being called an “accidental overdose” of sleeping pills? He denies that it happened and then shifts attention to his allegedly troubled 17-year-old daughter, Lauren. Deplorable? You bet.

Thomas is a once legendary NBA player and former New York Knicks president who continues drawing from an $18 million, three-year contract with the team. Last Friday, a police report indicated that a 47-year-old man at Thomas’ residence had overdosed on sleeping pills. (Yes, Thomas is 47.) When contacted later by the New York Post, Thomas denied he had overdosed and deflected the incident by saying his 17-year-old daughter, Lauren, was the one with a medical condition.

It “wasn’t an overdose,” he told the newspaper. “My daughter is very down right now. None of us are OK.” Clearly! That Thomas’ first instinct was to throw his daughter under the bus is deplorable. But now we find out that he outright lied (there was an overdose) and he painted his child as a scapegoat, perhaps, because of greed.
