It’s a funny thing but I remember most vividly the trick or treat candy that I hated and inevitably I got plenty of it every year. I despised those orange and black wrapped peanut butter chews and those dumb little boxes of nasty Boston baked beans. Sickening.

Wax lips…YEP!
One memorable halloween was when I was 5. I was out TnT with my brother. We were using brown paper bags (no plastic ones way back then LOL) for our candy. Somebody jumped out and scared me and I threw my bag down which in turn ripped apart. The kid that scared me felt bad and gave me his bag and helped me pick up my candy.

I remember when I was about six years old and my sister was too sick to go trick-or-treating. My mom had me carry an extra bag and ask for something for her too. Everybody felt so sorry for her, that she got much more candy than I did! My favorite Halloween memory with my kids is when my two year old son, who was just learning to talk said chicken feet instead of trick-or-treat!

My very favorite halloween memory from childhood is my mother’s withes brew. My birthday was always a week before halloween (23rd), so frequently I would have halloween themed parties where friends dressed up…
My mother always would make her famous witches brew!
Raspberry Sorbet (the whole container)
Raspberry Kool-Aid
7-Up (or sprite)
Put in a big punch bowl
Set punch bowl in a matching punch bowl with dry ice on the bottom (paper bag separating the dry ice from the glass on the bottom)
You end up with a fun and foamy punch that has a haze coming off around the outside. Way cool!

My mom would always make our costumes. Back then I hated it, but now i think she was a loving genius.

I was 6 years old in 1981. I was a short lanky kid with a loose front tooth and dressed in my dad’s furry brown jacket with a rubber monkey mask. My older brother was, fittingly, Darth Vader. We went around the neighborhood with hindered eyesight and dark, unsafe, colors and had a blast trick-r-treating. As Mom cleaned me up, my brother volunteered to quickly sneak my candy into his room so our parents wouldn’t rifle through it first. I quickly ran to my brother’s room to see what I got in my stash. About 20 Hot Tamales packages and 30 of what I thought were big red gumballs (AKA Atomic Fire Balls) poured out of my bag along with two apples and two toothbrushes. I was suspicious because my brother didn’t have any toothbrushes or apples. In fact, he had a ton of chocolate coins, and tiny candy bars. Well, I had never had an Atomic Fireball or a Hot Tamale before, and I started to eat the Hot Tamles quickly before our parents came in. Oh! The spicy pain! I started to cry softly, and I quickly opened one of the “big red gumballs” to ease my mouth. I started trying to bite down. My brother told me to suck on the candy, and I did. Those fireballs start out a little sweet and I didn’t notice. I thought I still had the spicy-pain from the Hot Tamales in my mouth. I tried one more time to bite down, VERY hard and, SNAP, I lost my first tooth. My screams brought my parents in fast. My mouth was VERY red, and my mom thought it was all blood (some of it was). She saw the apples and thought the worst (razor blades!). Words like “emergency room” and “bleeding to death” were thrown around. My brother started crying while I was in the bathroom getting cleaned up by our father. He thought he had killed me or something. He admitted to switching all my candy to our mom through his sobs. Dad discovered the lack of damage, but I had sadly swallowed my tooth. I looked at the gap in the mirror and smiled while I stuck my bright red tongue through it. Mom divided up our candy properly, but I didn’t eat any more that night. I went to bed with happy thoughts of growing up. I was also happy because my tooth gap grossed my brother out… especially when I stuck my tongue through it. Payback!

Yes, I remember the wax lips and teeth! I also remember the candy cigarettes. I remember one year I was a Rosebud in our third grade play! Someone from the school had painstakingly made my costume out of pink and green sheets of crepe paper. There was even a stem hat I wore. Not only did I wear the Rosebud costume in the play, but it was my Halloween costume. Good thing it didn’t rain that evening because my crepe costume would have been history! I also remember that when I was young, the streets would be so full of trick or treaters, at times it was difficult to walk through the crowd! Good times and good memories. Thanks for the chance to win these two wonderful Halloween DVDs. Cindi

My favorite memory is trading candy with my two sisters. We’d dump the buckets on the floor and trade away. Now we take the cousins trick or treating together. Such fun!

I remember how all of the parents would gather at the corner while all of us kids ran all over the block. It was so much safer, then!

There was a house with an old lady that would make us do a trick before we got our treat, we used to think about it for months every year what we would do to trick her, we just loved it!

I remember going to my cousin’s house and trick or treating together. One year we were all matching tigers. It was a blast. In fact I still go over to my cousin’s house for halloween. We have a pizza party and give away candy.

We lived in a row house in the city and I remember trying to get to as many houses as we could in the shortest amount of time with my brother. We then go back to house and trade all of our candy.

I remember “trick or treat for unicef”. I was never a big Halloween fan (I’m still not) but I always thought that was a cool option

One year, my older brother said there was a house I just HAD to go trick or treat at. So, I followed him the few blocks and went up the stairs to ring the bell. He waited down the stairs. The house had a big wide porch and the stairs and porch were all decorated for fall with hay bales, corn stalks and scarecrows. I got my treat and went back down the stairs past a few scarecrows. As I got near the bottom, one of the scarecrows reached out and grabbed my ankle! Scared the bejesus out of me, but then I laughed so hard - what fun!

The books are GREAT!! My daughter loved the addition to her collection! Thank you.
My favorite trick or treat memory is actually the carnival my school put on every Halloween. We had so much FUN!
