Pier 39 Carousel (Courtesy Pier 39)Very cool! Pier 39‘s brand new, double-decker carousel just arrived from Sernaglia, Italy, adorned with 32 hand-carved marine mammal and animal “rides” and painted with San Francisco scenes. A fun ride at any time. But this Monday between noon and 4 p.m., they’re christening the new merry-go-round and offering a shout out to the 19th anniversary of the famous sea lions’ arrival at Pier 39. Ride the carousel ($3 a ride) and the proceeds go directly to the Marine Mammal Center, the Sausalito-based veterinary hospital and marine mammal research and education center.

The only question will be, which animal to ride? Look for mythical sea dragons and hippocampi, sea lions, dolphins, pandas and horses, as well as chariots and spinning tubs. And try to spot the famous city landmarks – the Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, Chinatown, twisty Lombard, Alcatraz Island and, of course, the famous sea lions.
