Think a road trip with kids can’t be fun? Think again. The Maxwells of Danville, CA, spent six days scooting through Ohio, Michigan and Indiana last summer. Here are their discoveries:

THE TRAVELERS: The travelers: Shari Maxwell, Senior Auditor for AAA, her husband Mike, VP of Sales for TaylorMade Water Systems, and her son Danny Olson, 13.

THE TREK: “We were told by many people, ‘No one goes to Ohio for vacation!’ We did, and had a wonderful vacation! Stops included the University of Michigan, Cedar Point (Roller Coaster Heaven), NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, OH, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.”

BEST BEDS: Great Wolf Lodge, Sandusky, OH at Cedar Point. “Built as a replica of the famous Old Faithful Inn, the modern hotel has a 4-story lodgepole lobby, all rooms were suites, with ski lodge decor and wood beam ceilings, a game room for the kids, multiple restuaunts and a HUGE, full indoor waterslide park for the whole family! The Maxwells at the Rock & Roll Hall of FameThe waterslides began and ended indoors, but wound around outside before coming back inside. We only had two days there, but we could have stayed a week. Summer or winter, it’s always 80 degrees at the waterpark.”

BEST EATS: “Taggarts Ice Cream in Canton, OH. Right on the main drag through town, Taggarts still makes their own ice cream and hot fudge every day. We went in after we visited the NFL Hall of Fame, and had ice cream sundaes for lunch! Fresh roasted pecans on the huge sundaes, 2 whole bananas in Danny’s banana split, and tons of hot fudge, all served by pleasant and friendly local high school kids. The BEST ice cream we have all had in quite some time.”

The Maxwells at Cedar PointCOOL SIGHTSEEING: “Mixing a couple of major university stops in with the two Halls of Fame and the 18 roller coasters at Cedar Point was a nice mix for a 13 year old thinking about college, his mom and his football-fanatical step-dad. For anyone who enjoys thrill rides, Cedar Point in Ohio is a MUST do — 120 mph and 425 ft straight up, then straight down, 80 degree drops at 85 mph, loops, wood, steel, Cedar Point was amazing.”
