We’ve got babies on the brain here lately. My cubicle mate is about to become a proud auntie for the — ooo, fourth time? fifth? – and she’s hosting a baby shower soon. And babies just seem to be popping out all over. So we’re bringing you a Fab Five list of fabulous baby shower ideas, with a little help from guest blogger Karen Sullen, from CornerStorkBabyGifts.com, an online gift shop that’s all babies, all the time. As you might expect, Karen is a baby shower expert. And the trick, she says, is picking a good theme. Read on for Karen’s Fab Five list (with a few parenthetical comments from us), then come back Friday for more ideas.
“Sometimes, selecting a theme can be the most difficult part of planning a baby shower,” says Karen. “But once you’ve done that, all the other details seem to fall into place. So to get you on your way, here are some fun baby shower themes that will help sprinkle Mom with love.”
1. About To Pop!
Everyone is just popping with excitement as they prepare to welcome a new little star to the world’s stage. Whether you like to watch movies or wish you could be in them, this idea is perfect for the movie fan. Using a popcorn theme, treat your guests to movie snacks, your own home movie, and make popcorn balls to enjoy. You could even give guests a mini popcorn box that says “About To Pop!” with sweets inside as your baby shower favor. (Corner Stork carries cute pre-printed boxes, but you can get plain ones at most party stores too, including Boswell’s in Lafayette.)
2. “Get Your Goose” Book-Themed Shower
Books will be an important part of your child’s development. Get them off to the right start with a book-themed baby shower. Use your favorite Mother Goose nursery rhyme, like “Hey Diddle Diddle” or “Mary Had A Little Lamb”, as the inspiration for your decorations and ask guests to bring children’s books as gifts. You could even create a fun book-inspired diaper cake for your centerpiece gift. (On Friday, we’ll be talking about how to make your own diaper cake.)
3. Bun In The Oven
Celebrate the bun in the oven by making sure the parents don’t have to use theirs! Give this familiar cooking phrase a new twist by hosting the baby shower at a food prep place. Guests can prepare meals that can be stored in the freezer, giving the new parents the best gift of all—time! It’s an interactive baby shower that is fun and helpful. (We love this idea! Here in the Bay Area, you can try Super Suppers, Dream Dinners and The Full Plate. If we’ve missed your fave, please click “comments” and add it!)
4. Baby Time Capsule
Let the future be your inspiration by having a time-capsule theme for your shower. Ask guests to help you create a time capsule for your baby to open when he or she is 18 years old by bringing an item that represents the giver’s lifestyle or personality or how life is today, along with a gift that can be used in the future. Upon arrival, have them write their wishes for the future and how they hope baby’s life will be on “Message To The Future” cards. When the baby’s born, all you’ll have to do is include a newspaper from that day. (We’d be much obliged if it was ours, too.)
5. How “Tweet” It Is
This idea is perfect for a garden baby shower or one held in springtime. With chirping birds as the unifying element, create centerpieces that look like little nest eggs, beautiful bird napkin rings, and other “about to hatch” décor.
