Oh, Drew Barrymore, how you have grown! The photo above is, of course, a scene from “E.T. The Extraterrestrial,” just one of the kid pleasing faves on movie critic Barry Caine’s DIY Family Film Festival list. Also on Barry’s list:
“Marley & Me” – The family-friendly first half is almost all doggie cuteness, mischief and irascibility as married journalists (Owen Wilson, in one of his best performances, and Jennifer Aniston) get a golden lab, name it Marley, and adapt to its untrainability. The dog-centric first half will work for everyone, but the husband-wife bickering and the sad finale may trouble kids. So buyer beware.
“Duck Soup” – The Marx Brothers at their zaniest, running wild in the land of Freedonia, with Groucho as Prime Minister Rufus T. Firefly.
“Freaky Friday” – Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan (before the fall) play a mother and teenage daughter forced to switch bodies because of an enchanted fortune cookie. Curtis is terrific as a teen trying to adjust to mom’s “old” body.
What’s on your list? And has anyone seen Marley? What did you think?
