Too adorable. Here’s a lovely, thrifty way to get into the summer reading swim. You know the “Duck at the Door” and “Duck Soup” books by New York Times bestselling author Jackie Urbanovic? Max is a funny little mallard who stays behind when his flock flies south. He promptly moves in with Irene and her pets, including long-suffering Brody the dog, and proceeds to make himself at home. Too much so. He hogs the remote, swan dives (mallard dives?) into Irene’s bubble bath and makes the most appalling recipes. You can pick up these charming hardcover books and accompanying soft plush toys (Max is sitting on my desk at the moment and I can definitely attest to his plush, huggable splendor) for $5 a pop at any Kohl’s, now through June, and Kohl’s will donate that $5 to a variety of children’s health and education charities nationwide. Philanthropic loveliness … great summer reads … and Max gets a home with you. Just keep your TV remote away from the mallard. The duck is wayyy too fond of “World Wide Wrestling.”
