Teen gossip (Illustration by Laurie McAdam, MCT) Got teen with a yen to explore? The Oakland Library is hosting a Teen Summer Passport program to encourage teens to get out and see local sights – museums, farmers markets, skate parks and cultural venues. Starting June 13, pick up a passport at any branch, then start exploring and accumulating passport stamps by visiting one of the recommended Bay Area Hot Spots, writing short reviews, attending library programs or volunteering. For every three passport stamps, your teen gets a raffle ticket that could win him a laptop computer, an iPod Nano or a Flip camera. Cool, huh? Check out the library’s web site or call (510) 238-7232 or 238-7234.

Here’s another great adventure for teens who are interested in getting hands-on with welding, cutting, designing and creating. The Crucible offers a variety of exciting classes for youth 8 and older where they can learn to create with metal, glass, wood, electronic gizmos, and this year a special new workshop where they can design and create their own bicycle: Youth Frame Alteration – Hyphy Bike
Customize your bicycle in this exciting Crucible youth workshop! Students will learn basic fabrication skills in MIG welding, Oxy/Acetylene torch, grinding, and finishing to reconstruct their bicycles. Bicycle frames will be stripped and students will learn to redesign and alter its handle bars, rims, seat posts, and frames to create a unique, hip, and one-of-a-kind look that will make them the talk of the neighborhood. Students are required to bring their own bicycle, which they will transform into a bike of their own design.
    Class runs 6/29 – Jul 3rd
    $750 ($690 for members)
