Buy little cheap toys (like 10cents) at garage sales. Always a bunch of McDonalds toys available. Every hour they get to grab something out of the grab bag without looking.

Car travel hasn’t been the problem so far. Books, music, talking, and frequent breaks all work to keep my almost 3YO happy. But plane travel requires a lot more prep including something to watch on our laptops.

WE play the quarter game. Along our drives I gave the kids things to look for. Whoever found it first would get a quarter. They could use their quarters to by a snack at the gas station rest area.

What a great idea for a book. My oldest would love this (she loves making things out of paper, though she’s never tried origami yet).

My kids love to read (or flip through) magazines. And yes, I’ll admit it, for really long car trips we’ve been known to play movies. It’s quiet and everyone’s happy.

Our favorite back pack item is our “bag ‘o fun”. We have playing cards, dice, paper and pen. There are so many fun counting games to play.

What a fun book! My son is only 21 months old, so keeping him happy in the backseat now involves 1) looking for yellow cars (his favorite color) or anything else we see that we can quiz him about, and 2) shouting “ready, here we go, we are…under a bridge!” every time we go under a bridge (or occasionally traffic lights, when desperate). Whatever works!

Another vote for food and good music. As long as my kids have snacks, and we’re listening to something they like, they’re usually ok.
