BLAST OFF: Forget the moon. The Lawrence Hall of Science’s brand new exhibit is all about “Facing Mars.” Design your own rocket, check out your flight readiness with more than 20 space simulations, and answer that burning question, “Would you recognize a Martian if you saw one?” $4-$12; now through Jan. 3.
ROOT BIERGARTEN: The hills are alive with the sound of German music and family friendly fun at Newark’s Swiss Park Oktoberfest this Saturday from 6 to 11 p.m.
MORE OKTOBERFEST: Or join the family fun at Alameda’s Speisekammer on Oct. 4 and 11. Live music and dancing with the Golden Gate Bavarian Dance Club, grilled sausages and other Oktoberfest fare, and a children’s play area with a jumpy house. Free admission.
SWASHBUCKLING ACTION: Grab your doublet and head for the Renaissance Faire this weekend at Casa de Fruta near Hollister. Check out the swashbuckling action, enjoy the Celtic music and Renaissance characters, and revel in the blast-to-the-past ambience. $10-$25, kids under 5 free; now through Oct. 18.
APPLES BY THE BUSHEL: It’s a bit of a schlep to Placerville, but oh what a happy reason to go. Sip apple cider, sample fresh apples and eat apple pie, apple fritters, apfel strudel and caramel apples too during the annual Apple Hill festivities. And if that’s not enough, there’s a hay maze, pony rides and trains too. Open weekends through harvest season.
