Mr. Potato Head Pageant (MOCHA)
Clever Taters: Oakland’s  Museum of Children’s Art – MOCHA – is hosting its sixth annual Mr. Potato Head Beauty Pageant on Jan. 16 and your family can be part of the pageantry and fun. The art activities run from 1 to 3 p.m., with plenty of time to turn that root vegetable into something fabulous before the judging begins. No word on whether they’re conferring tater tiaras, or if everyone wins, but we find the whole notion of dressed-up potatoes irresistible. $7 per child, $3 per adult.

Bouncing Basketballs: The Harlem Globetrotters, those masters of athletics and comedy, land at Oakland’s ORACLE Arena Jan. 16 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets $21.50 and up.

Pint-Sized Duffers: Got a mini-golf enthusiast at home? Whack golf balls through windmills and exotic landscapes at Livermore’s Boomers Park, or try your hand at the Go-Karts, Bumper Boats or arcade games. Boomer’s is offering a special – $18 for unlimited play – on Jan. 18 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

King-ly Celebrations: Berkeley’s Habitot Museum is celebrating Martin Luther King Day Jan. 18 with a slew of special activities and extended hours in which to enjoy them. Hear King stories in the multicultural reading tent, make peace medals in the art studio and view the “Hope & Peace Wall” from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Beam Yourself Up: San Jose’s Tech Museum is hosting a Star Trek exhibit. Step onto the replica Enterprise bridge, check out the tricorders and phasers, and take a Star Trek trip aboard a full-motion flight simulator. Tickets are $19 for kids, $25 for adults, extra fee for the simulator, but Vulcan mind melds are probably free.
