TWILIGHT COUNTDOWN: Vampire Bites at Storyteller

Woo hoo — we’ve hit our first vampire party of the night at Lafayette’s Storyteller bookstore, where blood red punch (of course) and vampire talk are the order of the evening. And we’ve gotten a lesson on applying realistic looking fang marks from Melissa Manlove, one of Storyteller’s hosts of the evening. She’s wearing a fab white dress and blood dribbles down her neck in the MOST realistic fashion — not that we’ve seen a great many vampire bites, but it looked believable to us. If you’re headed out to a “Breaking Dawn” book release party and want to look like Edward has been snacking on you, here’s how to do it:

With a narrow paintbrush, apply two dots of black face paint to your neck — fang-distance apart. Then dribble fake blood (dip into your Halloween stash) from the dots, so it oozes down. Voila. Bitten.

1:45 till “Breaking Dawn” releases … and we’re off to the next fete.

TWILIGHT COUNTDOWN: Looking for a Book Party?

Less than four hours to go, and those wild and crazy Twilighters, Chris and Geo, are still going strong at the Fremont Hub Borders, where thousands of people have joined them, virtually… and Chris has collected a few marriage proposals. We’ve enjoyed checking in on them throughout the day. Our fave comment was from the fan who somehow got a copy of the book this morning and said, “I have it in my hands right now! But I promised all my sisters — 3 of them — and my daughter (yes, I am a Twilight mom, age 36) that I will not start to read it until they get their copies tonight and the Release Party we are going to! So I am going to keep watching your podcast to stay occupied so I don’t crack open the book.” Now that’s self-control.

We’ll be heading out soon for a little vampire action. We’ve got a photographer checking out the vampire prom at Danville’s Rakestraw Books, and we’ll be popping into a couple of other East Bay bookstores and reporting back on the action right here later tonight. Join us! Or, check out a book party on your own — here are some Bay Area possibilities:

TWILIGHT COUNTDOWN: Live from Fremont

The Twilighters.org team (Anda Chu/The Argus) Tick tock, tick tock. Less than 13 hours till Stephenie Meyer‘s newest entry in the “Twilight” saga lands in bookstores, and Geo and Chris – that’s Georgina Tena and Christopher McElvogue, the Fremont teens who launched fan site Twilighters.org earlier this year – are streaming live video from the Borders bookstore in the Fremont Hub shopping center. At the moment they’re talking about spoilers and how to avoid them: apparently one of the videos on YouTube has spoilers, so they’re warning folks not to peek. And after one fan told them about a bookstore that’s expecting 600 to 700 fans tonight, there’s much discussion about anticipated crowds and where everyone’s going tonight for the final countdown. Click “comments” and tell us, where will you be?

VAMPIRE Mania: It’s Twilight Time

"Breaking Dawn"It’s official. Vampire fever has swept the nation. Stephenie Meyer‘s fourth YA novel about teen Bella Swan and her interesting choice in men – a hunky vampire and a hot werewolf – hits bookstores tomorrow night at midnight, and 29 book stores in the Bay Area alone are hosting vampire proms, masquerade balls and other book release parties. Looking for a book fete near you? Meyer’s Twilight Saga web site has a Google map that lists them all – vast portions of this country appear as a fluttering sea of red party flags. Meyer is also hosting a “Breaking Down” Concert tomorrow night at 4 p.m. Pacific time – check out the webcast here. We’ll be blogging from one of the East Bay book parties tomorrow night – and we’ll be very curious to see how many moms are there with their daughters – but we want to hear about the festivities where you are too. Snap a pic, dash off a description and share your experiences. (E-mail us the jpegs and we’ll post them, or click “comments” and jot down a few lines.)

For more Meyermania, check out this morning’s Times story on the books’ appeal, the trailer for the new “Twilight” movie, and this morning’s interview with Stephenie Meyer on Good Morning America.
