You had to figure that LaRussa would take him as a coaches pick if the players didn’t select him. So it’s not as though this was his only shot at the team, but really if MLB sees totals and notices that both Soriano and Bonds will be playing, it would be simple for them to simply say that Bonds won the fan ballot and will be starting. It would have really hurt the Giants to have their star, whose face is plastered on the wall behind left field, not starting out there in the All-Star game. I wonder how many phone calls were happening behind the scenes.

Plus, you know Selig’s still feeling the heat from the tie game in Milwaukee.
