Furcal on the radar?

Remember how last offseason the A’s were generating buzz with the players they had on the trading block? This winter the anticipation revolves around players they might add, particularly through free agency. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports has a story up saying the A’s are one of several teams interested in free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal, who has spent the past three seasons with the Dodgers.

Furcal is coming off an injury-plagued year but he would be a big spark in the A’s leadoff spot, which was a glaring weakness for most of last season. If the A’s are searching for alternatives to Bobby Crosby (or looking to deal him), pursuing Furcal makes a lot of sense. And we’d find out how serious they are about shelling out significant free-agent cash. Furcal made $13 million per year w/L.A. and considering he’s just 31, he won’t come cheap this time around despite his injuries.

Remember that teams can’t talk money with free agents other than their own until Nov. 14. But let’s throw it out there, A’s fans: Would you like to see them make a run at Furcal?

I’ve read that the Dodgers will offer Furcal $15 million for two years (with a possible third year option), but that Furcal is seeking a four year contract. I kind of doubt that the A’s would be one of the teams that would offer a guaranteed four year contract to Furcal.

Of course, you never know with Beane. But I’d be less surprised to see him land a SS upgrade via some multi-team trade.
