if a's are serious in playing mlb the way angels, red sox, yankees , etc. play to win then it's a great move. BUT if beane is only doing this figuring he'd get more later in the season or August for Holliday - time will tell the tale.

It hurts seeing a player like Gonzo go but the possibilities that now arrive are crazy. No matter where Holiday hits (3 or 4 hole) other hitters are going to benefit from his lineup presence. From what I hear, Beane is hot after Giambi. That heart of the lineup would be a killer. Holiday in the 3 hold, Giambi 4th and Cust 5th. I'm curious to see who is going to show up in the Spring the shore up the #1 and 2 holes.

I'm sad to see Carlos go and Smith is going to be a good player but Holiday is just the type of player we need. I wouldn't care if we traded for a water boy...good riddance Street.

I was thinking that Billy wouldn't trade away all that talent to rent Holliday for 1 year. Do you think that a long term deal for Holliday is in the works? Perhaps, Wolff, tired of losing and getting harassed by season ticket holders in section 120, instructed Billy to spend more a build a winner. Building the offense around Matt Holliday is a sound baseball decision and an outfield of Buck, Sweeney, and Holliday is potentially a good one - especially if Travis can play every month as if it is September. I agree the rotation is taking a big hit. I really like Greg Smith. He had a professional approach to pitching and baseball in general.

I think it's a no-lose situation for Beane. If somehow Holliday can help the A's get into playoff contention, then Billy keeps him until the end of the year and gets two first round picks when Holliday bolts for free agency. If the A's are mediocre, Holliday will still have high trade value by the time the deadline comes up. Beane deals him for prospects and the process starts anew in 2010.
