There's more to this one than meets the eye.

McPherson may be looked at as a possible 3B candidate, but I don't think so - at least not as an every day option.

If the news in this link is true:
http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/mets/2009/11/mets-marlins-in-san-juan-may-b.html (scroll down toward the bottom)

...then BB may be looking at trying to keep two guys with balky backs healthy long enough for Wallace to get a little more seasoning.

Ideally, you could be looking at two guys who play every day, but alternate between 3B and DH. This would greatly reduce the wear and tear on both of their backs, and doing this, they may actually last until the ASB before one or both break down.

In that manner, they can delay Wallace's arby clock and give him the additional half-season that he probably needs. Best case scenario, McPherson stays healthy enough to serve as a right-handed, power hitting DH.

If your going to pick up players off the scrap heap, you may as well do it with a guy who isn't 40 years old and near the end of their career.

McPherson is a guy who, even before he got hurt, was never put out there for an entire season to get comfortable. If you're trying to catch lightning in a bottle, it helps to stack the odds in your favor as best you can, and I think the A's have done that here.
