Oakland did offer contracts to their other three arbitration-eligible players — outfielders Rajai Davis and Scott Hairston and reliever Michael Wuertz …

Will another club pay Cust $4 million? I wonder whether Cust might not be re-signed by the A’s anyway, but for what he earned last season – or less? There’s a glut of DH types in this offseason’s market.

You’re on the right train of thought, Si … It’s not out of the question he could return. But the only way it happens is if the A’s can’t find the power hitter(s) they want in free agency, and Cust doesn’t get the interest he hopes to find. Then you figure he would have to sign for right around his ’09 salary (at best). … I think the A’s are willing to shell out some cash — but they’re looking for a player who hits for a little higher average and offers a better glove.

No more Cust! The A’s don’t need one dimensional players as they’re rebuilding. Dumping the fat wiffer is the best move that Beane has made in years.
