Those stats in that one post are a bit off. One, Mulder was with the A’s for five seasons (2000-2004…both he and Hudson were traded in the same off-season). Two, both Hudson & Zito came up at mid-season, Mulder was at the beginning of the 2000 season…that skews your starts/season stat quite a bit.

And about Zito’s postseason record, etc, etc. He was always pitching in Game 3′s when Hudson & Mulder were both around so in theory in was facing weaker opposition on the mound. Then of course he had a couple of forgettable outings against Boston & Detroit.

Hudson without a doubt. Zito would be my second choice, then Mulder.

Oh, and for those who think Mulder is a good argument in a one game scenario….lets all reflect back to when Mulder lost back to back game 5′s in 2001 vs Yankees, and 2002 vs Twins. ZITO wins again.

So Joe poses the question “who would you choose if you needed to win one game?” I am shocked with the overwhelming answers of Tim Hudson. If we are talking about ONE game, lets look at what these three did in the postseason. The games that hold the most importance, and pressure in one game scenarios I think we can all agree is true. If you take all major pitching stats (W-L, ERA, WHIP, hits/9, k/9, BB/9) Hudson does not lead any of them between the three. Zito leads with 4-3 record, 3.25 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 6.9 hits/9. I think everybody is letting the SF years taint the vision of how dominating Zito was in the early 2000′s. The ANSWER IS ZITO!

I figure it’s interesting to compare all three of these guys whether Mulder resumes his career or not. They’re forever linked in A’s history. The debate is timeless

Mulder says he’s “stepping back” not “retiring” according to the SF cronicle. lol. but he did say someone said he was retiring, which he corrected.

Hudson, absolutely. To me, he was a more recent version of Dave Stewart. To win one big game, I throw out the stats and focus on the intangibles.
