My apologies for being so late addressing this ... I've chatted with Breslow a couple times about how he's doing. And each time he's told me he feels he's about to turn the corner. But he did say that when the season first began, it was tough for him to really cut loose w/his fastball after coming back from that elbow injury in spring training. His elbow wasn't still hurting, he said, he was just hesitant to really let it go after coming off the injury. Again, the last time I talked to him about it (been a while now) he said he was over that.

Is he still bothered by something physically? I don't know. But Breslow doesn't blow up the radar gun w/his fastball, so he can't afford to hold anything back w/that pitch. And his location, as you mention Bee, is crucial. The A's need more from this guy ...

Hi, Joe,

You didn't address Animal's comment about Breslow, with which I agree. He doesn't seem to have the command that allowed him to be effective last year. He needs to pound the edge of the plate or he gets taken deep. He can't blow the ball by guys. Do you know what is going on with him? Is he playing hurt? He doesn't seem like a head case. What gives?

There's been much written about the depth of the A's bullpen (I've done a lot of that writing myself). But I think this relief corps gets exposed a little bit when a guy like Michael Wuertz is missing. Besides Andrew Bailey, there really isn't a guy you can feel confident will enter the game and get a strikeout when needed. Tyson Ross has shown some nasty stuff so far, but the A's are going to use him carefully. He'll continue to get a few days off between outings because he's been a starter his entire career.

A healthy return by Wuertz -- not to mention the eventual return of Joey Devine -- is much needed for this bullpen.

I can't blame Gio too much for a bad inning - But why does Geren keep bringing in Breslow? This is getting tiresome.

However, it's not all pitching - 3 runs will never get it done against the Yanks. 2nd and 3rd no outs and nobody scores. Hopefully tonight will be better
