Not as bleak on the injury front today

Carl Steward here, pinch-hitting for Joe Stiglich on a gorgeous Sunday morning at the Coliseum …

Kevin Kouzmanoff is back in the lineup at third base. Catcher Kurt Suzuki isn’t, but it’s more of a precautionary day off which will give the A’s most indispensable player three consecutive days of rest before he jumps back behind the plate in Tampa Bay. Suzuki said before the game that it isn’t his back, but rather his left side that has been giving him problems. He just woke up Saturday morning and felt it. But he’s getting daily treatment for the injury, said Sunday he’s feeling 50 times better than he did.

As for Brett Anderson, not much will be known for a couple of days until he throws on the side in Tampa Bay on Tuesday. The A’s are hoping a couple of days of rest will do the trick. He didn’t have an MRI for the elbow-area tightness that forced him out of Saturday’s game.

Rajai Davis isn’t starting, but manager Bob Geren said Cleveland starter Justin Masterson has been tough on righties and he wants an extra left-handed bat in the lineup. Here’s the A’s batting order for this afternoon:

SS Pennington
1B Barton
RF Sweeney
DH Chavez
3B Kouzmanoff
CF Gross
C Fox
LF Patterson
2B Rosales

P Gio Gonzalez
