A’s draft Vanderbilt right-hander Sonny Gray

The A’s drafted Vanderbilt right-hander Sonny Gray with their first selection (18th overall) in the amateur draft. It’s the first time the A’s have selected a pitcher with their top pick since 2007, when they went with UC Riverside right-hander James Simmons.

Baseball America’s take on Gray — he’s on the smallish side (5-foot-11) but his fastball can reach 97 mph, usually sitting in the 90-95 mph range. His best pitch is a power curve ball that’s got 12-6 action on it, and he’s got a changeup that’s improved over time. …
