Ben Enos filling in for Joe Stiglich today
No clouds in the sky for Little League Day here at the O.Co Coliseum as the A’s prepare to take on the Indians in the conclusion of a three-game set.
Got a bit of news today, as the A’s announced that they’ve claimed INF Luke Hughes off waivers from Minnesota. Dallas Braden was moved to the 60-day disabled list to clear room on the 40-man roster.
Hughes is a super-utility guy with some pop, but only went 2 for 10 with two RBI in four games with the Twins this year before getting designated. For his career, Hughes is a .224 hitter with eight home runs and 33 RBI in 304 at-bats.
He’s played at first, second and third base in his major league career, and A’s manager Bob Melvin said “there’s a pretty good chance” that Hughes will be in the mix for playing time at third base. Melvin added that he’d get into that more tomorrow once a corresponding roster move had been made.
In other news, outfielder Coco Crisp remains out of the lineup as he makes his way back from illness. Melvin said that, in contrast to other A’s who recently had the flu, Crisp was also dealing with a bit of an inner ear problem so they’re taking it a little more slowly. Crisp hit in the cage earlier today, and Melvin said he’s likely available off the bench.
On the youngsters front, there are a TON of kids here today. This has to be every Little League in the East Bay. Several A’s were out to sign autographs, and a LL organization from Stockton did some relay drills with Stockton’s own Dallas Braden before the game.
And finally, my nickname in Little League was Lumberjack. That’s right. I’m sure it had nothing to do with my crazy swing.
