Ben Enos comin at ya, filling in for Joe Stiglich
About two and a half hours before the A’s and Tigers get together for game two of their four-game series and it’s already been a fairly newsy day here at the Coliseum.
For starters, Yoenis Cespedes will not play again tonight as he continues to make his way back from a strained hand. Manager Bob Melvin said he expects Cespedes to take some more soft toss, do some tee work and then hit live pitching in the indoor cage a little later today. Cespedes told reporters “it doesn’t hurt a lot, it hurts some.” Melvin did say he thinks Cespedes still could potentially play tomorrow.
In other news, the A’s welcomed outfielder Collin Cowgill and reliever Andrew Carignan back to Oakland and said goodbye for now to outfielder Michael Taylor and reliever Jim Miller. Melvin was clear in saying the moves were strictly for need, saying they needed a center fielder and right-handed reliever.
Taylor and Miller might not be gone for long, as Melvin praised both for the way they played while with the team. Taylor hit only .188 in four games played, but Melvin said the 26-year old was taking better at-bats and looked more confident than he had in the past. Melvin also said Miller “opened some eyes” with the way he pitched, but said that after Miller threw three innings last night, the team needed a right-handed arm.
On the pitching front, Brandon McCarthy is good to go for his start tomorrow. He’ll be opposed by Doug Fister.
Finally, the music selection in pregame today has been tremendous. There’s even some singing in the press box. Scary, I know.
