Brandon McCarthy heads home to get MRI, return to DL is possibility

This three-game series with Colorado is already off to a bad start for the A’s, as right-hander Brandon McCarthy has been scratched from Wednesday’s start. His right shoulder is acting up again and McCarthy has flown back to the Bay Area to get an MRI. A’s manager Bob Melvin said a return trip to the DL is a possibility for McCarthy, who has a history of shoulder problems. “I wouldn’t rule it out,” Melvin said of the DL. Melvin said the current problem involves McCarthy’s scapula (shoulder blade), which raises red flags. Stress reactions in the scapula have been a major contributor to McCarthy’s injury problems of the past. He’s been on the DL seven times total in his career. McCarthy had one start pushed back early in the season with shoulder soreness, then missed two starts on the DL when the shoulder acted up again. Each time he said the problem didn’t involve his scapula. “He’s been sore the past couple of days,” Melvin said. “We’re trying to be proactive here. When he’s pitching, he does feel good. It’s the lead-up days that aren’t great.”

Tommy Milone will now start Wednesday instead of Thursday, with Jarrod Parker moving up to Thursday. Because the A’s were off Monday, each pitcher will still be pitching on regular four days’ rest. Were McCarthy to miss another start, Melvin said the A’s would consider two options who have pitched for the A’s already this year, but he didn’t reveal names. Think Graham Godfrey and Tyson Ross here.

–The injury news on Yoenis Cespedes is much more encouraging for Oakland: His running went really well earlier today. Melvin considers him an option to pinch-hit tonight and said it’s possible he returns to the lineup Wednesday …

–Worth pondering: Whether Manny Ramirez could join the A’s on Friday for the start of a nine-game homestand. Ramirez is starting to find his stroke with Triple-A Sacramento. The A’s will get the DH back Friday. Hmmmm … Melvin was asked whether he thought Ramirez would arrive Friday. “I think anything is possible,” Melvin said. “He’s swinging the bat better now, but nothing has been said to me that (indicates) the timing is Friday.”

Tonight’s lineups:
A’s — Weeks 2B, Crisp CF, Reddick RF, Smith LF, Inge 3B, Moss 1B, Suzuki C, Pennington SS, Colon RHP.

Rockies — Colvin CF, Scutaro SS, Gonzalez LF, Cuddyer RF, Helton 1B, Pacheco 3B, Nelson 2B, Nieves C, Guthrie RHP.

    WHAT me complain?
    I will try -thanks Joe.

btw down 4-0 and I still watch..

  • TnSD11

Stan, I think I speak for most when I say we wish you didn’t still watch, or follow the team, or comment…

  • Stan

You know one thing about me..I never begrudge others to comment..I never post to ban somebody. So, Tn wish what you want. But I will post.

  • Stan

And Tn,don’t think for a moment you speak for as many as you think. Its awful vain of you don’t you think?

  • Stan

The A’S have comeback. Who knew Moss could hit a ball that far..darn majestic huh?

  • marc

TnSD11, you speak for me. I am just about ready to go to comcastsports because of Stan. Stan, you speak nonsense, have no clue, and are just irritating. I’m sure you are a nice guy, but come on man. Read your posts, 99% are downright idiotic.

  • stan

    GO.

  • stan

Its baseball Marc…Yeah yeah you only want to post about the second stringer’s average at AAA..go ahead. Like I said-your type bores me..but I dont complain. I do my thing,if you don’t like it…buy your own newspaper company.

  • stan

I don’t know what I’m talking about? you said Beane was a genius! Was he a genius when the A’s finished last back to back years? or the current streak of five straight losing years? Sure,he got Reddick-so what? when Reddick can get to the market..he’s gone.
If every fan was like me-pro active…Beane and Wolff would be driven off. On the other hand,if all you want is green jerseys running around while you eat a hot dog..well,good for you.
My opinion matters..and I know it.

  • stan

And I hate to say it Marc..but I forget 100% of your posts after I read them. Its just a baseball blog.

  • marc

Stan, if you are so smart and correctly predict everything like you say you do, then why the hell don’t you work for ESPN? Oh I forgot, it’s because you’re THAT GUY! The guy we all love to hate. You’re the guy that knows everything AFTER the fact. Whatever makes you feel good Stan, I mean Nostradomus. You make outlandish comments on EVERY mercury news blog. What’s next, you invented the question mark? Your opinion matters about as much as a soiled diaper. Now go get that job with the New York Times, your resume of artificial sports knowledge speaks volumes.

  • marc

BTW Stan, I said Beane was a genius in that particular trade. It’s called reading comprehension, learn it.

  • stan

Love to hate? Unlike you I refuse to be a sheep to what I see. What’s the genius Marc in Beane making the A’s a farm team for young stars for the rest of MLB? Why crow about Reddick when this franchise to this very day-says they will trade away any good player?
And-you make ad hominem attacks..but you don’t say YES you do have a great talent to call it. That’s what gets to you is because I do back up what I say.
I’m not wrong to bash Beane man and Wolff man..you must be crazy on the payroll if that bothers you. This is the worst ownership in baseball..and you like to read posts that love them?..bs for that.
If you want to read posts that are like the back of baseball cards..fine for you..but that accomplishes nothing.
I want Beane and Wolff to pack up and leave-minus the A’s.

  • stan

Yeah,my predictions history is a fine one. Proud of it too.
First in the country to catch ESPN

  • stan

    finger hit the wrong button..
First to catch ESPN and slurring Lin,first to write about Huff and his problems…first with JRussell and his addictions before the media found out. Same with Lincecum and his eating disorders.
Heck,on Lowell Cohn blog I was exactly right on Lincecums outing, with my pre game post.
I know.you don’t care or anybody can do that..but nobody but me does, as it turns out.

  • stan

You brought up my predictions..and somehow got the nerve to not add..and they were right. Lowell Cohn would back up on those and Steve Berman on the Lin on his blog(BASG). So don’t even hint Marc that I make things up.

  • stan

How could I forget..in the 4th week I asked how long Gore could last taking a beating under Harbaugh?.I asked if he was Superman?..that same week but later, Harbaugh said Gore is “Superman”. Uhuh no concidence. And you know what? in the 5th game of the season Gore was hurt never played a full game after that.
I must be the luckiest guy in the world to be so right..Or maybe-I just know what I’m talking about.

  • stan

and..the Warriors? too many to list…But those blog guys remember.
If I write about tiddly winks..instead of insulting me,maybe you could learn.
