No DL for McCarthy, Cespedes as A’s return home

The A’s return to Oakland tonight with sunny skies and a sunny disposition after a three-game sweep in Colorado. They take on the Padres tonight, as interleague play rolls on.

The news of the evening isn’t earth-shattering, but it is encouraging rather than discouraging. Neither Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) nor Yoenis Cespedes (hamstring) are headed to the disabled list, at least for today.

McCarthy threw a bullpen today,  and said he felt good afterwards. He won’t start tomorrow, with the A’s instead recalling Tyson Ross to take the ball. Manager Bob Melvin and McCarthy said the hope is that the right-hander can return to the rotation sometime next week, and McCarthy said that he’ll “start in a few days.”

On the Cespedes front, the plan remained to have the center fielder run around before tonight’s game, which he did during batting practice. Melvin said Cespedes remains day to day, but that being back home gives the team more options with the ability to use him as a DH.

One final injury note comes from left-hander Jordan Norberto. He also threw a bullpen, and Melvin said Norberto is “really close” to returning. Melvin made it sound like that will happen some time next week.

Now, on to the fun stuff. The A’s officially signed first round pick Addison Russell from Pace High in Florida. Russell showed up to the Coliseum on Friday looking very sharp in a beige suit, but quickly changed into A’s warmups and headed out to throw with Cliff Pennington. He took grounders at shortstop and took batting practice, at one point banging one off the right-center field wall with a nice inside-out swing.

He also scored big points in the politeness category, addressing everyone as “sir” and “ma’am” while talking to the media.

Tonight’s a fireworks night here at the Coliseum, so I’d say to expect a pretty good sized crowd. Travis Blackley toes the slab for the A’s, opposed by Anthony Bass. And, it’s Cliff Pennington’s birthday! He turns 28 today.
