Game 56 wrapup: Freiman scrambling for a TV to watch his wife compete in LPGA tournament

Ask anybody and you’ll quickly find there is a consensus in sports that timing is everything.

When that timing has to be spread out over two sports, however, that timing gets muddled.

Exhibit A is Oakland first baseman Nate Freiman. He’s probably going to be in the lineup Saturday for the A’s with Chicago throwing a left-hander, Jose Quintana. The game will start at 1:05 p.m.

At about that time Freiman’s wife, Amanda Blumenherst, will be in the middle of taking steps to secure a first win on the LPGA tour. Blumenherst has played in 81 pro golf tournaments with six top 10 finishes.

She’ll tee it up beginning at 11 a.m. (PDT) in the second round of the ShopRite LPGA Classic near Atlantic City, N.J., which is about the same time the A’s will have batting practice. She goes into the round tied for the tournament lead with Moriya Jutanugarn, both of whom shot 5-under-par 66s in the opening day of play Friday.

There will be some time Saturday to tune in the telecast, but it’s not as easy as that even in a clubhouse with perhaps half a dozen big screens…

“Rookies don’t change the channels in the clubhouse,’’ Freiman said with a laugh. “I’ll probably have to go to the video room and watch on one of the TVs there.’’

When Blumenherst is playing in a tournament and Freiman is playing for the A’s, it can be hard to talk, given the time differences.

“Today was good, because I was able to talk to her after she was off the course,’’ he said. “But that doesn’t always happen.’’

In the off-season Freiman will occasionally serve as caddy for his wife on the tour. For now, however, he can only root from 3,000 miles away.
