Drew Pomeranz is slated to start Game 2 of the A’s double header on Wednesday, provided that he’s not needed in relief in the first game. If Pomeranz is called on in the twin bill opener, A’s manager Bob Melvin said rookie Arnold Leo will make his major league debut.
The A’s and Mariners are playing twice Wednesday as a makeup for the April 4 game that was cancelled due to poor field conditions when a bad weather report led to the grounds crew not placing the tarp on the infield.
Melvin said he expects to have all of his relievers available Wednesday, although “some guys who threw a little more may be targeted for the night game.”
Luke Gregorson threw 23 pitches in his one inning of work Tuesday night and Jim Johnson threw 25 pitches in another rough home outing for right-hander who began the year as Oakland’s closer.
Johnson allowed four unearned runs Tuesday, with his own throwing error making the runs unearned. He’s 0-2 with one save and an 8.44 earned run average at home, but 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA on the road.
* Josh Reddick is back in the lineup for Game 1 and starting in right field after missing the past two games with a sprained ankle.
* Eric O’Flaherty is slated to throw to batters on Saturday as he continues his rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery, which was performed May 21, 2013. Melvin said he’s not sure when he’ll begin a minor league rehab assignment.
“I think a lot of it will have to do with how he feels the first couple of times out,” Melvin said.
