A’s postgame: Oakland gets a lights-out win; Josh Donaldson’s woes continue

Darren Sabedra here again, wrapping up the A’s lights-out win Saturday night over the Yankees before handing this gig back to beat man John Hickey

The A’s got the expected Saturday night, another gem from Scott Kazmir, a pitcher whom manager Bob Melvin says has been nothing but consistent since joining the club.

And (sort of) the unexpected, a bank of lights at O.co Coliseum going out in left field, prompting nearly a 40-minute delay in the middle of the fourth inning.

They also got more struggles from the heart of their order, capped by Josh Donaldson’s ejection after his slump reached 0 for 31.

photo (50)Melvin said the umpires made the decision to delay the game, largely as a safety precaution.

Was there a chance it would be called?

“The discussion was you’re worried about the safety,” Melvin said. “So if it doesn’t come back on, then obviously there was a chance it wouldn’t start again.”

The A’s officially called it a circuit-breaker outage, noting that the breaker had to be reset manually in the left-field light tower.

Donaldson, John Jaso and Jed Lowrie all went 0 for 4 on Saturday to run their woes to a combined 2 for 81.

Brandon Moss went 2 for 3 but is still 4 for his last 26, making the foursome 6 for 107.

Asked specifically about Donaldson, Melvin said, “It’s difficult. When you’re that good and you go through a prolonged slump, it gets to the point to where he is right now. It’s pretty hard on him. But it’s not affecting his defense, and he’s going to come out of it.”

Donaldson was ejected by home-plate umpire Hal Gibson after the seventh inning.

“I just asked the guy a question,” Donaldson said. “That’s it. I’m not gonna talk about it, man. I just went up and asked him a question. I didn’t think I deserved to be thrown out. That’s all I got.”

Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings, marking the first time this season he has yielded more than three runs on the road in seven starts.
