PREFACE: I graduated from Cal in '63 and, after a stint in the Army, I was assistant SID from 1967 to 1974. I decided I didn't want the wins and losses of a college football team to determine whether or not I enjoyed my job, so I took a real job - as a sportswriter for the Eugene Register-Guard. (No cheering in the pressbox.) I covered Oregon track and the Ducks a few years in basketball, but I found it was safest for me not to get emotionally involved when I covered the preps. And so I was a preppie most of my 25 years with the Guard before retiring in '99. I was in Japan for a wedding the Saturday of the SC game. I turned to your blog for some perspective. Thank you for what you do.
QUESTION: From my days working in the athletic department, I remember assistant coaches telling me I shouldn't root for Stanford or SC in the Rose Bowl because every time they have success they use it against Cal in recruiting. I found myself perplexed watching the SC-Notre Dame game. I despise the arrogance of SC and yet I found myself kind of pulling for the Trojans because a win would help the conference and Cal's standing. Has the BCS changed the way coaches look at conference opponents and their success? Do they actually pull for conference teams now? I still find it difficult to pull for SC and Stanford under any circumstances.

Jay- I am finally able to think past USC. After seeing Texas lose to A&M last night, is it possible to see a Cal-Texas match up in the Holiday Bowl? I haven't forgotten about the Rose Bowl two years ago. Nothing would make me happier than to exact a little revenge on Mack Brown. Furthermore, it would be a quality win that would play well with voters for next season's poll and recruits. What do you think?
