Halftime

Some quick notes:

Kevin Riley looks like somebody making his first career start. He’s had some nice moments and some bad ones. The good news is he should improve with each passing possession.

The defense has played terrific. The Beavers have scored all their points on turnovers and that questionable squib kick at the end of the first half. Zack Follett looks like he never mised a game.

Thomas DeCoud is Cal’s leading tackler with seven. Justin Forsett has rushed for 124 yards already.

Jonathan Okanes

Jonathan Okanes is in his fourth year covering Cal's football team. Previously, he covered Cal's men's basketball team for four years. He can also be followed on Twitter at twitter.com/OkanesonCal.

Sweet game Bears! Maybe rename Memorial Stadium to Reser South! Good luck the rest of the way!

Despite the fatal error at the very end, Riley played a pretty terrific first game. Something like over 300 yards passing (I haven’t seen the actual stats yet, but I heard Lou Holtz praise they guy with all his yards thrown).

I understand that it is more important to have a 100% healthy Longshore–as well as a more-experienced backup–but I thought Nate would have made an appearance in the clutch.

I was late getting to Memorial, so I missed all the pregame warm-ups. The guys who sit behind me said that Longshore was out there and looked good. Wasn’t he good enough to come in toward the end to save the game?

At least we only fell seven/eight spots in the Coaches/AP polls…and we’re ahead of $C in one (AP) and tied in the other (Coaches).

I trust we had to endure this in order to get Longshore back and ready to go against UCLA. We will beat them, hands down. I think, even if we had to go with Reilly, our backup QB is far better than their backup QB and converted fullback.

If we had to lose, it’s still early enough, and, as we now know, it didn’t affect us all that much in the polls. Everything is still within reach.

The Rose Bowl is still Cal’s for the taking. Beat, as planned: UCLA, Arizona State, WSU, $C, Washington (looking easier), and Stanford (also looking easier).

The Oregon win is what makes this all possible, NOT the Oregon State loss. Let’s keep the focus on what we’ve all wanted for so long (Pasadena) and rest assured that is it still very much in the cards.
