Unofficially, the season starts next month

That’s because it was announced today that Pac-10 media day will be held July 24 in Los Angeles. This is kind of like the unofficial start of the season, or at least the beginning of the hype. Each team brings its head coach and one significant player, and a throng of media badgers them for a few hours. Believe it or not, it’s just seven weeks from tomorrow.

At the Coaches Tour in Pasadena yesterday, Tedford kept praising Mack for staying in school one more year.

So who will Tedford bring to the media day in July? You might laugh but I think it will either be Follett or Mack.

Hey Fedup. Interesting Reading, eh? Stay at home and skip the season, we won’t miss you or your kind in 2008. We prefer fans who deal in real currency, not the currency of whine.

“Cal’s program isn’t there yet, but in a short period — primarily since Jeff Tedford was hired as head football coach in 2002 — the school has built a burgeoning athletic empire…”

“in 2006-07 Cal ranked eighth in money raised among all Division I schools. The Bears were tops among the eight Pac-10 schools that disclosed donation figures”

“David Rosselli, Cal associate athletic director for development, proudly asserted that if the survey had covered the past three years, Cal easily would have led the nation in donations.”

Former Cal quarterback J Torchio, now part of a real estate lending firm in Lafayette and an active partipant in mobilizing donors for the football program, said Tedford was the galvanizing figure who set an entire engine into motion: “Cal has been a diamond in the rough for a long, long time,” Torchio said. “It just needed the people that touch it to get on the same page. Finally, with Jeff, all the pieces started to fit and we could take off with it.”
